AMSTERDAM, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was recalled to the Netherlands squad on Monday for the first time in two years, the Dutch Football Association said.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Norway striker John Carew has pulled out of the squad to face Iceland in a Euro 2012 qualifier in Reykjavik on Friday, the Norwegian FA said on Monday.

Fan surge sounds World Cup security alarm
TEMBISA, South Africa – The World Cup games haven’t even started yet and here was a scene that everyone has feared: helicopters in the sky and ambulances – their sirens wailing – trapped in clogged alleys while a small line of riot police held back the remaining mob on a garbage-strewn street.
Less than a week remains before the first game of football jersey the World Cup, and on Sunday evening in this township northeast of Johannesburg there was an illusion that safety could no longer be guaranteed.
Most disturbing was that this was 2½ hours after a frustrated mass of mostly Nigerian fans angry at not being allowed into tiny Makhulong Stadium for a friendly match between Nigeria and North Korea surged against a giant locked gate next to the players’ entrance injuring 15. By then, a game of soccer had been played, the fans who were inside had left and the players had showered and boarded their buses.
Yet only then was the police mobile-command vehicle van arriving, trying to inch its way through the knot of cars that filled the only road through the neighborhoods to the stadium. The police vehicle’s siren screamed. Its horn boomed. And nobody moved. With fans and cars filling the street, there was nowhere to go. Finally, the police van’s driver opened the door and jumped out. He waved his hands frantically. Move. Move. The line of cars slowly inched to the side. The siren screeched again. The cars slid a bit more until at last a path had been cleared. The van finally crawled to the next tangle of traffic a few feet away.
For months South Africa has assured the world it will have a safe World Cup. This despite the fact the country has one of the highest crime rates on the planet and violence in and around Johannesburg is such a concern that people live behind giant gates and walls topped with electric wiring. There has long been a feeling that South Africa – isolated at the bottom of the world – has no idea what is about to descend upon it.

Nobody could be sure. One witness, Charles Ledwaba, said an announcement was made on a local radio station that free tickets would be handed out at nearby police stations between 7 and 11 a.m. Lewaba, who picked up one of the tickets, said the fans who surged toward the stadium had not gotten their own tickets and yet were demanding to be allowed in because the match was advertised as free.
The fans were also not at the main gate but a secondary entrance which is used more for players, officials and media. When police told the fans to go around to the front, a walk several blocks through a neighborhood that would take at least 20 minutes, the fans balked and pushed forward. At first, witnesses said, no one could tell that people had been hurt. But then they saw blood pouring down victims’ faces. Soon after, ushers and some police tended to the injured.
Such scenes are not new to international soccer, and many are far worse such as Ivory Coast’s stadium tragedy that left 22 dead and 130 injured before a World Cup qualifier last year. Nobody died outside Makhulong Stadium, but on a test run for security just days before the World Cup it’s something that shouldn’t have happened. Especially in a city that knows too well the dangers of crowds at soccer games. In April of 2001, more than 40 people were killed in a soccer stampede at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park Stadium, which is one of the World Cup venues.
Two years later, a commission studying the disaster released a report with 14 reasons for why it happened. ROODEPOORT, South Africa – Jonathan Spector, a defender on the U.S. World Cup team, has not had much of a chance to watch the NBA Finals, what with all his team requirements and the fact the games don’t come on until about 2 a.m.

With our keeper rules, we get one keeper and forfeit the pick used to draft them. My best options are giving up my sixth-round pick to keep Jonathan Stewart(notes) or my eighth-round pick to keep Felix Jones(notes). In either case, I think I'm getting good value, but their respective backfield situations have my head spinning. Is this the year Felix gets a chance to play consistently, or is nfl jerseys he going to be just another back trapped in a three-headed monster? Stewart was a beast for me down the stretch last year, but can I count on him to keep up his production with DeAngelo Williams(notes) healthy? Your answer is much appreciated.

I'd say you're in a pretty good spot here, Jimmy. Like you said, you're getting a solid player at a good value either way.
I definitely like Jones quite a bit heading into this season. It seems as though the Cowboys are finally ready to turn him loose after using him somewhat sparingly over his first two years, and he has responded by bulking up to take on a bigger workload. I'm predicting he'll overtake Marion Barber(notes) in terms of production and have a breakout season in a loaded Dallas offense.
That said, my advice to you would be to keep Stewart. While Jones is a slightly better value as an eighth-rounder, he has consistently struggled with injuries (missing 12 games over two pro seasons) and is a bit too risky as your lone keeper. Stewart hasn't been a picture of health, either, but he hasn't missed a game in his career and is set to be a major part of wholesale nfl jerseys the Panthers' offense yet again. Even though Williams is their starter, Stewart should see 12-15 carries every week and is a safe bet for double-digit scores. And he'd be a monster if Williams succumbs to injury. I see him as a safe keeper with a lot of upside. In a league in which QBs get six points for passing TDs, how much value would you put on them, and when should I take one? I know there are a lot of good QBs and normally you would wait to draft one, but in this scoring system I feel QBs should be taken in the first round. Please help me out on this.

You're right, Mike: QBs definitely are more valuable in your league than in formats that award only four points for passing scores. Whether or not you should take one in the first round, though, probably depends on your draft position.
If you have one of the first few picks, I wouldn't recommend drafting a QB over any of the elite RBs. I say that because of the drop-off from guys like Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson or Maurice Jones-Drew(notes) to the next group of nfl Saints jersey RBs is fairly sizable in my mind. On the other hand, I don't think the falloff from Aaron Rodgers(notes) to Tony Romo(notes) is quite as steep, which is why I'd still go RB early in the first.
Once the top-tier backs are gone, though, it's perfectly fine to draft a QB like Rodgers or Drew Brees(notes). These guys are going to throw for a ton of scores, and in your system, that's equivalent to running or receiving for a boatload of TDs. If you are picking in the mid-to-late first round, I see no problem with grabbing an elite QB and guaranteeing yourself a flurry of points from that position each week.

Searching for QB help next year?
This is something to keep in mind as you watch the 2010 season.
Several teams will be looking for new quarterbacks. And several intriguing options will be available to be had.
Getting ahead of cheap nfl jerseys myself is what I do best. I excel at it.
But let’s face it: There are teams who need a quarterback now. What would preclude us from putting them near the top of this list? People in Buffalo, for instance, might be staying up later than usual on Saturdays this fall, watching a lot of Washington Huskies games this season with the idea that Jake Locker might be their future QB.
Throw in other intriguing senior QBs such as Christian Ponder and Nathan Enderle, along with underclassmen Andrew Luck and Ryan Mallett, and next year’s draft could be a whopper at the position. To read more, check out our first 2011 Draft Newsletter previewing the college seniors and a few choice underclassmen. (This should sit on your coffee table for the next two months while you watch college games — you will thank me for this later.)
The free-agent market is potentially enticing, too, though not quite as star-studded if Tom Brady(notes) and Peyton Manning(notes) are re-signed, as expected. But you could be looking at names such as Matt Moore(notes), Michael Vick(notes), Alex Smith, Matt Hasselbeck(notes), Troy Smith(notes) and possibly even Donovan McNabb(notes), though both he and the Redskins appear to want to get an extension done.
That said, here are the teams that enter this season most likely to seek quarterback help for 2011:
1. Bills — The QB of the future likely isn’t on the roster. Trent Edwards(notes) and Brian Brohm(notes) are young, but that’s about all they have going for them. Edwards has the look of a solid but unspectacular career backup. It’s not fair to blame him entirely for the Bills’ would-be struggles, but you have to think the team brought in Chan Gailey to work with a young QB who has yet to arrive.
2. Jaguars — Like above, putting blame on David Garrard(notes) if the Jaguars struggle probably isn’t entirely just. But he has not delivered the way the team has hoped since he received an extension after his breakout season. Plus, a young, hotshot quarterback might energize the fan base, which is always a concern in northern Florida.
3. Vikings — You Know Who says he isn’t coming back. We’ve all heard the reports of New York Giants jersey Tarvaris Jackson’s(notes) improvement, but if he was that good, the coaching staff would not have sent a search party to go poach YKW down in Mississippi and beg him to return. Jackson very well could start in ’11, and selfishly I hope he gets the chance again. But there’s no doubt that the team will look to groom a young QB as an insurance policy for Jackson.
4. Chiefs — Is this Matt Cassel’s(notes) last stand? Maybe not. But the preseason returns have been a bit worrisome to date, and the pressure is mounting for Cassel to put up something on the field commensurate with his healthy salary. Charlie Weis and Todd Haley are QB guys, and they’ll certainly have their eyes open after this season if Cassel turns in a clunker of a season.
5. Browns — With talk that Colt McCoy(notes) already has the coaches thinking he might never be the guy, there’s little question that Mike Holmgren and whoever his coach is next season will want someone young to bring in and groom as the future starter. Not since Bernie Kosar have the Browns had a homegrown quarterback whom the locals have rallied around.
6. Cardinals — The locals already are calling for Kurt Warner(notes) to get off Twitter and unretire. It’s not happening, folks. And even if Matt Leinart(notes) (assuming he beats out Derek Anderson(notes)) plays better, I think there’s a high likelihood that there will be another QB on the roster in ’11 — either a veteran to push Leinart or a developmental guy to … well, push Leinart.
7. Raiders — I am a Jason Campbell(notes) fan, and I think the Raiders are keen on him, too. But he’s the quarterback whom everyone seems to want to replace because he never will be a star. If Campbell proves a lot of doubters wrong, this could be delayed by a year. But I think because they got him so cheaply, the Raiders won’t hesitate to go after a young QB with a flashy arm. One problem: Oakland’s first-rounder belongs to the Patriots, sent in the Richard Seymour(notes) deal last year.
8. Steelers — This all depends on Ben Roethlisberger(notes). If he straightens up and flies right, there’s no issue: He’s the team’s QB. But one more step afoul, and it could mean his can hits the street. He was very close to being a former Steeler, if you buy into some of the reports from this offseason. Dennis Dixon(notes) might be the flavor of the month, but the Steelers might believe they could do better.
9. Bengals — There will be no more excuses for Carson Palmer(notes) if he struggles to throw the ball this season with a very talented group of pass catchers. Palmer remains the guy, but he’s not locked up long term in the way some people think he is. Again, it never hurts to have a young contingency plan, and it would not stun me to see the Bengals think QB in the draft in the first few rounds. I wonder if Enderle might not be their kind of guy.
10. 49ers — Similar to Palmer, Smith must produce now. The pieces are in place. But heck, I could see the Niners winning 10 games and winning their division, similar to the Jackson-led Vikings a few years ago, and the team still looking to make a QB change. Smith remains young, but he has had plenty of New York Jets jersey chances to improve.
11. Titans — Kerry Collins(notes) is a great backup, but he might leave via free agency. And Vince Young(notes), as well as he played down the stretch, remains a somewhat uncertain commodity. Can you hand him the keys to the franchise for the next five seasons? I like his unique skills, but I think this question gets raised at season’s end.
12. Redskins — With nothing done yet on McNabb’s deal, it raises the chances of a new quarterback being drafted. Besides, Mike Shanahan is a QB guy, and he’ll want a young option that offers more than Rex Grossman(notes), who is a mere placeholder. The problem is draft picks; as in, once more, the Redskins lack them next year.
13. Bears — Total projection here. We don’t know what kind of season Jay Cutler(notes) will have. We don’t have an idea whether Lovie Smith will return as coach. We aren’t even sure if GM Jerry Angelo will be back. But we do know that all these questions, heading into a make-or-break year, make a QB addition all the more likely next season. Unless you think Caleb Hanie(notes) or Dan LeFevour(notes) really has the goods.
14. Buccaneers — By all signs, Josh Freeman(notes) is the present and future QB. But what if he bombs this season? Do you panic and draft another quarterback? No, probably not, but you might add a veteran — Smith comes to mind, as does Hasselbeck — to let Freeman know that the coaches want to see more, much more. And while we’re on the subject of coaches, do we know for sure that Raheem Morris will be back? No, we do not.
15. Seahawks — Hasselbeck likely will end his Seattle days, and Charlie Whitehurst(notes) projects as the starter at some point, perhaps this season. But you have to consider that the team will look to add another one. But would they go the veteran or nfl jerseys rookie route? It should be interesting to keep tabs on this situation.
16. (tie) Patriots/Colts/Cowboys — The Cowboys waited too long to find Troy Aikman’s replacement. Several teams will be looking for new quarterbacks. And several intriguing options will be available to be had.

The free-agent market is potentially enticing, too, though not quite as star-studded if Tom Brady(notes) and Peyton Manning(notes) are re-signed, as expected. But you could be looking at names such as Matt Moore(notes), Michael Vick(notes), Alex Smith, Matt Hasselbeck(notes), Troy Smith(notes) and possibly even Donovan McNabb(notes), though both he and the Redskins appear to want to get an extension done.
That said, here are the teams that enter this season most likely to seek quarterback help for 2011:
1. Bills — The QB of the future likely isn’t on the roster. Trent Edwards(notes) and Brian Brohm(notes) are young, but that’s about all they have going for them. Edwards has the look of a solid but unspectacular career backup. It’s not fair to blame him entirely for the Bills’ would-be struggles, but you have to think the team brought in Chan Gailey to work with a young QB who has yet to arrive.
2. Jaguars — Like above, putting blame on David Garrard(notes) if the Jaguars struggle probably isn’t entirely just. But he has not delivered the way the team has hoped since he received an extension after his breakout season. Plus, a young, hotshot quarterback might energize the fan base, which is always a concern in northern Florida.
3. Vikings — You Know Who says he isn’t coming back. We’ve all heard the reports of New York Giants jersey Tarvaris Jackson’s(notes) improvement, but if he was that good, the coaching staff would not have sent a search party to go poach YKW down in Mississippi and beg him to return. Jackson very well could start in ’11, and selfishly I hope he gets the chance again. But there’s no doubt that the team will look to groom a young QB as an insurance policy for Jackson.
4. Chiefs — Is this Matt Cassel’s(notes) last stand? Maybe not. But the preseason returns have been a bit worrisome to date, and the pressure is mounting for Cassel to put up something on the field commensurate with his healthy salary. Charlie Weis and Todd Haley are QB guys, and they’ll certainly have their eyes open after this season if Cassel turns in a clunker of a season.
5. Browns — With talk that Colt McCoy(notes) already has the coaches thinking he might never be the guy, there’s little question that Mike Holmgren and whoever his coach is next season will want someone young to bring in and groom as the future starter. Not since Bernie Kosar have the Browns had a homegrown quarterback whom the locals have rallied around.
6. Cardinals — The locals already are calling for Kurt Warner(notes) to get off Twitter and unretire. It’s not happening, folks. And even if Matt Leinart(notes) (assuming he beats out Derek Anderson(notes)) plays better, I think there’s a high likelihood that there will be another QB on the roster in ’11 — either a veteran to push Leinart or a developmental guy to … well, push Leinart.
7. Raiders — I am a Jason Campbell(notes) fan, and I think the Raiders are keen on him, too. But he’s the quarterback whom everyone seems to want to replace because he never will be a star. If Campbell proves a lot of doubters wrong, this could be delayed by a year. But I think because they got him so cheaply, the Raiders won’t hesitate to go after a young QB with a flashy arm. One problem: Oakland’s first-rounder belongs to the Patriots, sent in the Richard Seymour(notes) deal last year.
8. Steelers — This all depends on Ben Roethlisberger(notes). If he straightens up and flies right, there’s no issue: He’s the team’s QB. But one more step afoul, and it could mean his can hits the street. He was very close to being a former Steeler, if you buy into some of the reports from this offseason. Dennis Dixon(notes) might be the flavor of the month, but the Steelers might believe they could do better.
9. Bengals — There will be no more excuses for Carson Palmer(notes) if he struggles to throw the ball this season with a very talented group of pass catchers. Palmer remains the guy, but he’s not locked up long term in the way some people think he is. Again, it never hurts to have a young contingency plan, and it would not stun me to see the Bengals think QB in the draft in the first few rounds. I wonder if Enderle might not be their kind of guy.
10. 49ers — Similar to Palmer, Smith must produce now. The pieces are in place. But heck, I could see the Niners winning 10 games and winning their division, similar to the Jackson-led Vikings a few years ago, and the team still looking to make a QB change. Smith remains young, but he has had plenty of New York Jets jersey chances to improve.
11. Titans — Kerry Collins(notes) is a great backup, but he might leave via free agency. And Vince Young(notes), as well as he played down the stretch, remains a somewhat uncertain commodity. Can you hand him the keys to the franchise for the next five seasons? I like his unique skills, but I think this question gets raised at season’s end.
12. Redskins — With nothing done yet on McNabb’s deal, it raises the chances of a new quarterback being drafted. Besides, Mike Shanahan is a QB guy, and he’ll want a young option that offers more than Rex Grossman(notes), who is a mere placeholder. The problem is draft picks; as in, once more, the Redskins lack them next year.
13. Bears — Total projection here. We don’t know what kind of season Jay Cutler(notes) will have. We don’t have an idea whether Lovie Smith will return as coach. We aren’t even sure if GM Jerry Angelo will be back. But we do know that all these questions, heading into a make-or-break year, make a QB addition all the more likely next season. Unless you think Caleb Hanie(notes) or Dan LeFevour(notes) really has the goods.
14. Buccaneers — By all signs, Josh Freeman(notes) is the present and future QB. But what if he bombs this season? Do you panic and draft another quarterback? No, probably not, but you might add a veteran — Smith comes to mind, as does Hasselbeck — to let Freeman know that the coaches want to see more, much more. And while we’re on the subject of coaches, do we know for sure that Raheem Morris will be back? No, we do not.
15. Seahawks — Hasselbeck likely will end his Seattle days, and Charlie Whitehurst(notes) projects as the starter at some point, perhaps this season. But you have to consider that the team will look to add another one. But would they go the veteran or nfl jerseys rookie route? It should be interesting to keep tabs on this situation.
16. (tie) Patriots/Colts/Cowboys — The Cowboys waited too long to find Troy Aikman’s replacement. Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant(notes) - People attending Short Attention Span Theater only have a bit of time to think about the Packers, and if you believe the NFL Network these days, 75 percent of the aggregate energy spent in Green Bay is spent pining for Brett Favre(notes), and the other 25 percent is spent wondering if Aaron Rodgers(notes) can measure up (as if we didn't already know that he could). Those a bit closer to reality know the value of New England Patriots jersey Ryan Grant to the offense. Dallas Cowboys RB Tashard Choice(notes) - Here's a guy who won't be a feature back unless lots of people get hurt. Choice is buried on the depth chart behind Marion Barber(notes) and Felix Jones(notes), but he's the best rusher the team has on first and third downs, in the draw plays Jason Garrett likes to run, and in the receiving game. Choice is also a lead candidate to take snaps in Dallas' Razorback (i.e., Wildcat) formations, when Felix Jones replicates the stuff he used to do with Darren McFadden(notes) at Arkansas. This is a guy who could (and would) be the lead back on at least 10 NFL teams ... on a ‘right now" basis. A tremendously productive and versatile back, his time should be now.
San Diego Chargers WR Malcolm Floyd(notes) - You'll notice that while San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith has at least been meeting with the representatives handing left tackle Marcus McNeill(notes), he's been relatively quiet about receiver Vincent Jackson's(notes) threats to hold out the entire season if he doesn't get the long-term deal he wants. There is a lot of thought around the league that as good as Jackson is, adjusting for Philip Rivers'(notes) excellence is a wise thing to do. Would Jackson be as effective in a less dynamic system with a quarterback who didn't have an equivalent skill set? In addition, Smith has guys like Floyd and Legedu Naanee(notes) on his roster to pick up the slack. Nannee is more the inline possession guy, but Floyd has proven his ability to get downfield and make plays - he's averaged 17.2 yards per reception in each of the last two years. That's very important in Norv Turner's vertical offense, and if Floyd can continue his good work from 2009, Jackson will start losing leverage.
Minnesota Vikings TE Visanthe Shiancoe(notes) - A quick note for all you folks bailing water because Sidney Rice(notes) and Percy Harvin(notes) won't be there to catch footballs from Everybody's All-American: Don't forget about Shiancoe. He saw better numbers under Favre in 2009, but it's worth noting that Shiancoe also ranked highly in DVOA and DYAR in 2008, when Gus Frerotte(notes) (yeah, Mr. Stadium Concussion himself) was the Vikings' main quarterback. Shiancoe has quietly moved into the Gates/Gonzalez/Clark level of efficiency, but his skills won't be undersold when he's the one bailing Lord Favre out week after week.

Of course, the thought was that Jamaal Anderson(notes) would take that role, but the 2007 first-round pick out of Arkansas has been a total bust. In the meantime, Biermann - who was selected in the fifth round a year later - impressed last season with five sacks in a situational role. Now that Anderson has put on weight for a switch to a swing end/tackle role, and Biermann has been tearing it up in the preseason, look for him to get a better shot at the big time.
